
There is a wealth of things to do and places to visit in Sunderland, such as the 14th Century Hylton castle. Sunderland also has some attractive beaches namely Roker and Seaburn.
The national glass centre opened in 1998 highlighting Sunderland’s history in the glass making industry. There are many museums in Sunderland, the main one, the Sunderland museum is the first municipally funded museum in England outside London. It houses a huge collection of local Sunderland Lustreware Pottery. The city also has a City Library Arts Centre which has a gallery for contemporary art.
The city also has its own rugby and cricket clubs they are both located in Ashbrooke opened in 1887. The Crowtree leisure Centre has hosted snooker and boxing matches many of which are televised. Sunderland also has a an aquatic centre costing £20 million with an Olympic size pool and six diving boards. Sunderland Harriers Athletics Club located at Silksworth Sports Complex has produced some Olympic winners making athletics very popular in the city.
Every year Sunderland hosts many popular events such as Sunderland International Air show where over 1.2 million people come each year, it is the biggest free air show in Europe, and the International Festival of Kites, Music and Dance.
The city has it’s own remembrance service every year one of the largest services in England outside London. Every Christmas Sunderland has a large German market offering German goods and produce.
It has a huge ice rink and a very popular theatre, which was opened in 1907 and is the biggest theatre in the northeast. It was recently refurbished due to its popularity , it has recently showed, “My Fair Lady” and “Starlight Express”. In 2003 Sunderland hosted it’s first film festival with a second held in 2005 which has held openings for many Hollywood films including “Shakespeare in Love”
The beaches of Roker and Seaburn offer sand, sun and surf, as well as breathtaking views of the sea. There are popular beauty spots, many popular cycle routes and a health spa resort, Seaham Hall which has been voted England’s Leading Hotel and Spa Resort at the 2007 World Travel Awards.
