Penshaw, Sunderland
The small village of Penshaw is a region of the metropolitan district in Sunderland. Its previous names include Painshaw or Pensher. It is located around three miles north of Houghton-le-Spring, across the River Wear from Washington.
Its name comes from Cumbric Pen which means hill or ridge. Penshaw is famous locally for its monument, a huge landmark, erected in 1844 on Penshaw Hill, and is a half-scale replica of the Temple of Hephaestus Athens.
