Some of the neighbouring villages include Grasswell, Shiney Row, Herrington Burn and Success/Philadelphia. The name Newbottle is an Anglo Saxon word meaning “New Battle” or “New Settlement”. The village dates back to 1050 and the name has been found mentioned as far back at 1183 as 'Newbotill'
As with most areas in Sunderland coal mining was a major business however the last coal mine closed in 1956. In the 19th century there were three very modern and expensive potteries as well as a corn mill. The local church in New Bottle goes back to 1850. There are many beautifully made stone built houses in the area which is itself a conservation area, with numerous walks and routes making it perfect for ramblers. There Herrington County Park nearby offers walks, picnics, cycling and boat modelling. This area is a mile on foot from the village and there is a footpath between the two.
The local economy has changed dramatically in recent times, land has been developed by property developers and the local Co-Operative and Post Office have both been closed. There are some nice pubs and local clubs in the area such as The Jolly Potters, The Sun Inn and the Italian restaurant Benito's at the Queens Head. There is a controversial development planned where 7,000 trees are to be chopped down to make way for a new development or football stadiums, car parking and infrastructure. There have been many protestors and the debate goes on. Newbottle has a primary school called Newbottle Primary School with over 450 students. The village also have excellent road links to Durham and Sunderland.
