Herrington, Sunderland

Herrington is a region located in southern Sunderland, and was previously in County Durham. Herrington is split into east, middle, west, and new villages. East and middle are now mostly residential , west and new are located near Doxford International Business Park.

Historically the area was owned by the Monks of St Cuthbert and was owned by the Bishoprics of Lindisfarne. The villages used to be made up of farming communities going back to 1200. The farms in the Harrington area were owned by the Lambton Estates. In middle Harrington there is Herrington Hall which in Tudor times was occupied by a local family called Robinson who for many generations lived there and owned vast amounts of property, they focused their attention however on the Quayside at southwick.

One of the Robinson family even married the son of the poet Robert Burns. In 1795 they sold the house to a man called Bishoprics of Lindisfarne. Sometime in the 19th century the Durham Coalfield began to immerge and many collieries sprung up in the region, one in New Herrington.
