Fulwell is a rather well off region of north Sunderland. It is next to Seaburn, Southwick, Monkwearmouth and Roker. Stats show that it is also the least deprived region in all of Sunderland. The general housing in the region is quite varied, there is a huge array of streets in the south of the region, with some beautiful 19th century houses and quaint cottages, all heavily influenced by the Victorians. There are many shops, pubs, schools, a golf course, fire station, a library and some useful bus links.
Many years ago Fulwell was a farming village until the 19th century when it became part of Sunderland’s industrial growth. There are three windmills including the 19th century Fulwell Mill, which is the only mill to have a stone reefing stage. The mill was built in 1808 and was carefully restored in 1996. It took 5 years to completely restore after not being used for over 50 years. The region of Fulwell is a safe conservative seat and for many years has always had a conservative councillor. Today it has 3 conservatives on the council.
