The University of Sunderland has 16,000 students, including 1,000 students from overseas. In 2005 it was named 'Best English University for student experience' by the Times highest education supplement.

The university goes back to 1901 when it was a technical college, now today it is made up of two large campuses. They are the City Campus and Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. There is also a media centre with radio and television production facilities.

In June 2007 a three stage development began and in 2008 plans for a £75 million investment was revealed to change the look of the university to include an £11 million sports and recreation complex called cityspace. The university has four academic departments, for teaching, research, learning development and working with businesses and industries.

The university has 6 halls of residence, Scotia Quay, Panns Bank, Clanny House, The Precinct, The Forge and All Saints. Scotia Quay and Panns Bank are placed across the River Wear, a position where ship building used to occur. The Precinct is positioned just five minutes walk from the City Campus.

There is a student magazine called DN - Degrees North, and a radio station called Utopia FM which has been broadcast since 1997 and now has a full Community Radio Licence from Ofcom.
